Kodachrome Basin Trails

Travelers wishing to wander through the staggering maze of Kodachrome State Park’s many sedimentary spires can enjoy a series of rugged desert hiking trails.

Ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty, these ancient trails date back to early Anasazi Native Americans, and evidence suggests they were the first to transverse their way around these otherworldly rock formations. Several trails span throughout Kodachrome Basin State Park, providing both short and half-day hikes.

Grand Parade Trail

Looking for a ground-level hiking experience with plenty of room to get up-close and personal with the exotic desert plant life? Grand Parade Trail provides a scenic 1.5-mile (2.4 km) trail on the floor of Kodachrome Basin, giving travelers the chance to explore not only the desert wildlife but two box canyons along the way. Open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horses, Grand Parade Trail gives hikers a perfect stroll through the Kodachrome’s famous spires.

Difficulty: Easy (Box canyons are open to foot travel only)

Panorama Trail

Explore the legendary geological wonders of Kodachrome’s “Cool Cave,” “Secret Passage,” and “The Hat Shop.” These famous variations of sedimentary pipes await hikers who make the journey through Panorama Trail. Winding its way across the western side of the park, this trail can be done as either a 3-mile (4.85 km) or a 6-mile (9.7 km) loop. And it’s open to horses and bicyclists too!

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate

Angel’s Palace Trail

Hikers longing for a glimpse of some of southern Utah’s most famous landscapes can spend their bliss traversing the mighty 150 trail above the basin floor viewing Kodachrome Basin and Bryce Canyon National Park. This 1.5-mile (2.4 km) path is a photographer’s paradise.

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate. Open to: Hikers

Nature Trail

For all those budding naturalists out there, Nature Trail provides hikers with an informative introduction to the wildlife, botany, and the unparallel geology scatter throughout the abandoned landscape of Kodachrome Basin National Park. This short trail is just 0.5 miles (0.8 km), but brimming with all the best-kept secrets of Southern Utah’s deserts.

Difficulty: Easy. ADA accessible

Shakespeare Arch – Sentinel Trail

Named after the famous English playwright, Shakespeare’s Arch is the only large natural arch within Kodachrome Basin State Park. Stretching around a 1.7 mile (2.7 km) loop, this charming trail provides majestic views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument that wraps its supernatural presence around the entire basin. Hikers desiring a more challenging route can take the Slickrock Cutoff, which winds its rocky journey behind Shakespeare’s Arch and Sentinel Spire. A 1.7-mile (2.7 km) loop
Difficulty: Easy to Shakespeare Arch (0.5 miles/0.8km), Moderate to strenuous thereafter.
